Dragons Den & Presentations
Presentations, Judges interviews &
Tour of Wolverhampton University Campus Priorslee Telford.
9:30 am-3:30pm
Wednesday 21st March 2018.
Shropshire CC area schools.
The Venue
The event was based at Wolverhampton University (Priorslee Campus). It
gave the kids a real taste of what life could be like at a place like it. It
was a nice early start for the kids that saw Flo running most of the way to
school!
We arrived in plenty of time and were allocated a room for the day where
they could practice in private. The kids had all worked very hard to learn
their parts so that they could present without scripts.
They were given just 8 minutes for their first and only practice. They
were quite intimidated by the location in one of the University lecture
theatres.
They had developed their presentation using Prezi in order to add a
'wow' factor, it worked, the judges were very impressed, not only with the
presentation itself but with the obvious time and effort the kids had put in to
learn their lines.
Dragons Den Interviews
The kids knew that they were going to be asked questions but what they didn’t
realise was that it was in front of a panel of 5 judges who all fired questions
at them. The team coped well, with the answers being shared throughout the team
depending upon the subject matter. For some of them this was a harrowing experience
that they dealt with extremely well.
Stem
Next on the agenda were two stem activities where they learnt about the
drone program and engineering departments at the university.
The Main Event
After eating a light lunch – not, (a full roast dinner for most of
them), it was back into the lecture theatre for the presentations. The understanding
was they would have a 10-minute confidence booster from David Graham (young
enterprise) and then present to the judges once again.
However, the reality was totally different. Unlike previous years they
were going to present in front of not only the judges, but every other team! That
represented more than 100 people!
With 17 teams having four minutes each going second-to-last wasn’t great.
The nerves started to jangle, even I had sweaty palms. But eventually it was
their turn. They were brilliant. With hardly a stumble they presented like pro’s
and did both me and the school proud.
